Although several studies have examined cases in areas with complicated bathymetry, no one has conduction detailed analyses of the suitability of depth-averaged models for typical open-coast areas, which often tend to be relatively slowly varying spatially. Our work here should be recognized as a step toward an eventually moreuniversal applicability; however, as our point of departure, we will focus on situations which represent the most significant risks in most coastal areas along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States. The propagation of the coastal surges inland, interacting with inland hydrologic flows represents the dominant flood-producing hazard in these areas. It is likely that our work can be extended and the work here should be considered as a starting point for such generalization. A Stochastic Mortar Mixed Finite Element Method for Flow in Porous Media with Multiple Rock Types
This paper presents an efficient multiscale stochastic framework for uncertainty quantification in modeling of flow through porous media with multiple rock types. The governing equations are based on Darcy’s law with nonstationary stochastic permeability represented as a sum of local Karhunen-Loève expansions. The approximation uses stochastic collocation on either a tensor product or a sparse ...
متن کاملFinite element simulation of compressible particle-laden gas flows
Amacroscopic two-fluid model of compressible particle-laden gas flows is considered. The governing equations are discretized by a high-resolution finite element method based on algebraic flux correction. A multidimensional limiter of TVD type is employed to constrain the local characteristic variables for the continuous gas phase and conservative fluxes for a suspension of solid particles. Spec...
متن کاملCoupling Methods for Multiscale Simulations and Adaptive Modeling Uncertainty Quantification in Atomistic-to-Continuum Methods for Complex Molecular Systems
In this talk, we will present our recent progress on the development of multiscale approaches for coupling concurrent models used to describe phenomena spanning different spatial scales. The main approach is based on the Arlequin framework in which a reference particle model, supposedly intractable, is replaced by a coupled model that blends solutions from small and large scale models [1,2]: mo...
متن کاملA heterogeneous multiscale modeling framework for hierarchical systems of partial differential equations
This paper presents a heterogeneous multiscale method with efficient interscale coupling for scaledependent phenomena modeled via a hierarchy of partial differential equations. Physics at the global level is governed by one set of partial differential equations, whereas features in the solution that are beyond the resolution capability of the coarser models are accounted for by the next refined...
متن کاملDeveloping the Next Generation Scalable Exascale Uncertainty Quantification Methods
Predictive modeling of multiscale and multiphysics systems requires accurate data-driven characterization of the input uncertainties and understanding how they propagate across scales and alter the final solution. We will address three major current limitations in modeling stochastic systems: (1) Most of current uncertainty quantification methods cannot detect and handle discontinuity in the pa...
